Fur: animals suffering for fashion

浏览次数:    时间:2021-05-15

Fur is cruel

More than 100 million animals around the world suffer and die for the fur industry. The majority - mink, fox, raccoon dog, chinchilla and rabbit – spend their entire lives confined in small, barren, wire cages on fur farms where they are unable to express their natural behaviours and often exhibit signs of psychological distress rocking and pacing repeatedly, a clear sign they have gone mad with boredom. Countless investigations of fur farms in many countries including Finland, Canada, Poland, China and other countries show animals suffering horrific injuries and kept in deprived conditions. Mink – naturally solitary animals – can even driven to cannibalism and eating their own young by the stress of being trapped in such tiny cages.

Killing methods used on fur farms are also cruel. When their fur pelts are at their prime, before they are one year old, mink are gassed death, and foxes and raccoon dogs are electrocuted. Investigations in China have shown animals being beaten to death in front of each other. All of these methods in all these countries cause pain, fear and suffering.

Trapping wild animals for fur, like coyotes in North America, is also cruel. The traps used catch the animals by the legs or necks. Animals are often left in these traps for days, unable to seek shelter, food or water, or defend themselves from predators, and sometimes they even try to tear off their limbs trying to escape. When the trappers finally arrive, they will either shoot them, or stamp or beat the animals to death.fur_fox_raccoondogcage_0106_1215_HSI.jpg

Fur is unnecessary and out of fashion

Fur is fast falling out of fashion. More and more of the world’s leading fashion designers and retailers are dropping real fur from their collections, including Gucci, Prada, Chanel, Burberry, Michael Kors, Versace, Armani, Nordstrom, Macy’s & Bloomingdales, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Jimmy Choo and DKNY. That’s because they recognize that animal cruelty is not fashionable and the future of fashion is fur-free. There are also really exciting innovative materials being used in fashion that are kind to animals and the environment.

Fur is bad for the environment and public health

Fur farming is a polluting and energy-inefficient process. When compared to other textiles, fur takes a higher toll in terms of environmental damage including greenhouse gas emissions, water and air pollution – as well as causing animals to suffer. Even a small piece of fox fur trim on a coat has come from an animal factory farmed in conditions that are harmful to the planet. Fur farms also put human health at risk. Mink on more than 420 mink fur farms across 12 countries have been found infected with COVID-19. The potential for zoonotic disease spread, and for mink fur farms in particular to act as reservoirs for coronaviruses, incubating pathogens transmissible to humans, is another compelling reason to ban fur farms and stop wearing fur._MG_9634.jpg

Fur farming is being banned all over the world.

Fur farming has been banned and/or is in the process of being phased-out in Austria, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Croatia, Macedonia, the Netherlands, Norway, Luxembourg, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and the United Kingdom. Most recently the government in Hungary declared a ban on the farming of animals for fur including mink and foxes, the French government is currently debating a ban on mink fur farming, and the Irish government has made a commitment to bring forward legislation. Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Poland and Ukraine are also considering bans on fur farming, and in Finland the majority party of the coalition government recently announced its support for a ban on fur farms. In the United States, California became the first US state to ban fur sales in 2019 following similar bans in cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berkeley and West Hollywood.

Let’s be fur-free!

Fur belongs on beautiful animals, not on our coats. So let’s stand up for animals by making sure our clothes, bags and accessories are fur-free!
